A Connection To Our Miracle

Once Ava was officially adopted, I knew we wanted to met the police officer that found her. I thought it would be great to take her around and say hello and get pictures. I left messages at the station but never heard back and then life has gotten so crazy it just hasn't happened.

A few month's back, Scott did some custom work for our friend's new house on the North side of town. They told us that they knew the police officer that had found Ava. He was in their ward. I didn't write the name down as I thought it was the same one that I had from the reports but it wasn't. I did a search for the name in our Stake but couldn't find him. I must have remembered the name incorrectly and kept meaning to ask my friend but haven't yet.

Well today I needed to make an appointment to have my temple recommend renewed. I had already done my interview within our ward and now I needed the second interview with the Stake. I looked on line to see the Stake number I needed to call and I saw the name my friend told me. When Scott got home I double checked and sure enough, I had the correct name.

Regarding my recommend, I left a message for the Stake secretary to call me back. When he did, he told me that I needed to call a different person - the police officer that had found Ava. I called and made my appointment and then asked him a personal question....Was he a police officer - Yes. Was he the one who found a baby in a box - You mean awhile back - Yes, there were two of us. Well, I told him, "We're the family that got to adopt her.

Isn't that Awesome! He is Mormon, He lives in our Stake boundaries and we'll see him this Sunday and introduce him to Ava.

Ava - 15 Months Old

Ava is so much fun to be around. She is into everything and loves exploring the world around her. She is learning so much and making connections all the time, which brings us a lot of joy and laughter.

When Scott's family was visiting, some pictures were taken. One of the times, the person taking the picture said 'Cheese' to the group and Ava said cheese. Then later Scott went to get Ava some Cheese to eat and Ava said cheese. I'm still working on Turtle

In this 'Sink' situation, Ava was playing in my office while I was finishing my work. Her hair was in her face so I said, "let's go to the bathroom and do your hair". Ava walked out of my office into the bathroom. I still get excited that she knows what I'm saying but then the real fun started. I put the pony in Ava's hair and then lifted her up to see it. Ava stood on the counter and then stepped into the sink and sat down. Once she saw all the great things to play with, she was in heaven.

A Wonderful Visit

Scott's Mom Linda and her husband David came to visit a couple of weeks ago. We were all so excited and loved having them here. They drove their truck and trailer and enjoyed some stops between California and Colorado. I was on a business trip for part of their visit so I was really glad that they were able to extend their time in Colorado. We can't wait for them to come again!

Keyna's Halloween Face

I love this picture of Keyna that Scott recently captured. With her eyes glowing, she looks like the perfect Halloween cat.

The Right To Vote

Has anyone seen the HBO movie, 'Iron Jawed Angles' staring Hilary Swank, Anjelica Huston, Julia Ormond, Frances O'Conner and the adorable Patrick Dempsey?
I watched it last night in my hotel room and though it was very late, couldn't turn it off. I was not aware of the many sacrifices that were made so that I, a woman could have the right to vote.

If you have not seen the movie, I highly recommend it. It is a much needed reminder to many of us - That We Vote Because WE CAN!

From the Movie Blog:
"Synopsis
IRON JAWED ANGLES recounts for a contemporary audience a key chapter in U.S. history: in this case, the struggle of suffragists who fought for the passage of the 19th Amendment. Focusing on the two different women, Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor), the film shows how these activists broke from the mainstream women's-rights movement and created a more radical wing, daring to push the boundaries of political protest to secure women's voting rights in 1920.

The women are thrown in jail, with an ensuing hunger strike making headline news. The women's resistance to being force-fed earns them the nickname 'The Iron Jawed Angels'. However, it is truly their wills that are made of iron and their courage inspires a nation and changes it forever."

In looking for more details on this movie I found the following comments on a blog and thought I would add them here as well.

"The women were innocent and defenseless. And by the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and with their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted of "obstructing sidewalk traffic." They beat Lucy Burn, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air. They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the "Night of Terror" on November 15, 1917 (a mere 87 years ago), when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote. For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their food -- all of it colorless slop -- was infested with worms. When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

So, refresh my memory. Some women won't vote this year because--why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?"

Suffrage for Women - The Right to Vote

On August 26, 1920, the United States ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote. The struggle for women's suffrage lasted for more than half a century.

Now - Let's get out and Vote and make ourselves heard and appreciate this gift give to us from these Iron Jawed Angles.

Business Trip

I'm traveling this week on a business trip. I'm in Columbus Ohio and it is beautiful. We've had some rain but have been very lucky in that each time we've gone out the rain stopped. This evening we (11 of the 12 people here from the company) walked downtown and had a wonderful Italian dinner. Since we were such a big group, the restaurant suggested they just serve us lots of shared dishes. We had Italian salads, meats, cheeses, pastas, pizzas and desserts. The dishes just kept coming and were yummy. They had the best olive oil for dipping bread. I've forgotten how awesome, good olive oil can taste.
It was such a fun night but I miss my family so much and the moments that I'm not there and not seeing. Last night I called home and was in time to sing songs with the kids. Such simple things sure make a good day - GREAT.

Mtn Dew Rules

Scott was carrying Ava down the stairs to our basement play room as well as his Mtn Dew drink. Ava started playing with the straw and before long was getting some soda from it. As soon as Scott realized that she was drinking it, he moved the cup away but you can see from Ava's face, she was not happy. She started crying and every chance she got during our play time, was going after Scott's drink.

A girl after my own heart - She really is my daughter because nobody messes with my Mtn Dew either.
